To reduce measurement errors in wastewater flow meters, measures can be taken across multiple aspects, including model selection and installation, operation and maintenance, and environmental control.

  Selection and Installation

Appropriate selection: Choose the suitable meter type based on the wastewater’s characteristics, such as corrosivity, conductivity, and suspended solids content. For highly corrosive wastewater, select a flowmeter made of corrosion‑resistant materials; for highly conductive wastewater, use an electromagnetic flowmeter; for wastewater containing large amounts of suspended solids and exhibiting good conductivity, also opt for an electromagnetic flowmeter; and for clean wastewater, consider an ultrasonic flowmeter.

Proper installation: Ensure sufficient straight pipe lengths upstream and downstream of the flowmeter to allow the fluid to enter the measuring tube smoothly, minimizing the effects of vortices and uneven velocity distribution. For vertical installation, ensure that wastewater flows from bottom to top to prevent bubble accumulation; for horizontal installation, align the electrode axis parallel to the ground. Additionally, keep the meter away from sources of interference such as pumps and valves.

  Use and Maintenance

Regular calibration: Perform periodic calibration in accordance with the user manual or based on actual operating conditions, using standard flow devices such as standard volumetric tubes and standard flow meters to ensure measurement accuracy.

Timely cleaning: Impurities and fouling in wastewater tend to adhere to the electrodes and the inner walls of the measuring tube, compromising measurement accuracy. Regular cleaning is essential; the cleaning interval should be determined based on the degree of wastewater cleanliness.

Ensure full‑pipe measurement: During flow‑meter operation, the pipeline must be completely filled with wastewater; partial filling can lead to unstable measurement signals and increased measurement error. When installing, ensure that the pipeline remains fully filled at all times; measures such as elevating the downstream pipe or installing an air vent valve can be employed.
